Ground broken for middle school in Grant Hill happened in mid-December. BYCOR General Contractors, Hughes Marino, and Studio E Architects hit the ground running. The conversion on the 40,000 sf hospital into a learning environment is best described by Bonnie Nicholls in her article Old Grant Hill hospital transforming into charter school as, “[a]n architecture firm and a public charter school … breathing new life into a frumpy old building on the edge of downtown San Diego.” We couldn’t have described it better. District 8 Councilmen David Alvaraz chimes in, “In blighted communities – communities where you’ve got a lot of empty buildings or empty land – it’s good to see activity, especially a school. You’ll see families, and this is a very family-oriented community.” The transformation of the hospital to the school has brought unique challenges and opportunities in every phase of the project. The campus is scheduled to open in September.
